For Florists? What Is Your Market Dominating Proposition That Clearly Distinguishes You from All the Other Florists Around You?

By Steve Sapato · Posted on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 · Tagged in Marketing

I was just reading a post about florists and everyone had similar comments. That made me think of the florist I work with in Sac. So now I ask, with all of the florists out there, what makes you special? Why would I go to you over every other florist out there?

In my book, Shops that POP! 7 steps to extraordinary retail success, I profiled Tiger Lily , an award-winning florist in Charleston, SC. One of the secrets of its success was to be dedicated to 'be the best place to buy awesome flowers,' said Manny Gonzales, owner with his wife Clara. Manny's success mirrors something we see often with successful shops these days: New owners coming from outside the industry who don't just operate with "business as usual". Working in an established industry and doing things the way thousands of other (failing) businesses do things is not a recipe for success. Tiger Lily introduced some new ideas for employee compensation, and reacted to a few crises in their market with bold changes in operation.

I would first develop a clear, compelling and distinguishing brand narrative. Identify what problem you solve, determine if that problem is something people care about (and if not, how you can make them care about it), and then regularly demonstrate how your company is the best solution for that problem. All of your offerings should then reinforce your core purpose--laddering up to your brand story.

For me in the floral industry, my business is recognized as a top provider in the area. We pride ourselves on exceptional selection and we offer extraordinary service backing up our products. When people stumble upon Twiggies they are pleasantly surprised at our boutique Modern Day General Store atmosphere. We have such a wide range of products in our retail location that it hooks them for not just standout floral service but also on trend merchandise hitting categories of home, gift, garden, and women's apparel. In our event sector we have a full selection... (more)
