How Can One Who Is Starting Afford to Hire Advertising and Marketing Help?

You haven't said what business you are starting. By your profile are you doing workshops? You can post them on Udemy, or other places to post your workshops. Post your workshops as an event here on Alignable, LinkedIn, Facebook business page, join a Barter group like InstantBarter.com, no fee to join. Find joint partners who have the same audience so you can cross-promote with each other. Got a Blog? Create video's and post them, even if they are just tips about what you are educating about.

Hi Madlyn, I help run a design agency based here in VA, but serve clients all over the US. Sounds like your question might be better worded as "Where can someone on a startup budget find advertising and marketing help?" Or are you asking for ways to get more capital to be able to hire a firm like ours?

If you are asking for ways to find more affordable marketing and advertising help, you could private message me. I am part of an online networking group of freelancers in various professions related to graphic design and marketing. I could post on there on your... (more)

You have found the reason for the horrible failure rate for new businesses. Last thing that goes into the budget is the marketing and advertising because you depend on the old 'word of mouth' to spread your story. Guerilla Marketing is a must read and taking the course is a great idea as well. Network, network, network...o...did I mention network. Determine what your 'ideal customer' looks like...find out where they hang out and go hang out with them and ask questions....lots of questions.

Is anyone on here familiar with Fiverr - fiverr.com ?
You can get articles written, graphic designs, press released all for about $5 - $10. You can get anything you want including SEO, backlinks, audio's, voice over's, you name it! Fiverr has it. I know who the good writers and designers are if anyone is interested send me a message.
I used Fiverr for years when I first started out.

Vivian,

I tried to use Fiver and I found the person I worked with to be quite incompetent. She couldn't figure out a way to make my speaker page with picture so that it could be reproduced. That was only one person so I might tryn them for less complicated things. Just wanted to share the experience.

Hi Trish!

Yes, go back to Fiverr. There are amazing people working there. I have close to 300
successfully completed gigs there and only about 7 that did not work out for me.

Look for and only hire "Level 1 and Level 2" people. Also look to see how many testimonies they have and if they are good reviews.

And...if you are not satisfied with your finished product Fiverr will refund your money.

I haven't use them since I started my own small business social media and content marketing however I used them for years.

The last time I logged in I did notice not... (more)

I fond my expereince with Fivver and Upwork very time consuming and highly negative.

you spend too much time searching for the right indidvidual to hire and then you hope they really can produce wht you contracted them for. Most of the time its a headache so I just outsource what I need to local talent. For bigger projects such as websites wp sites, SEO, and social media advertising campaigns.

My company handles all that in house www.jigmarketing.agency

When you are using Fivver.com and Upwork.com you need to have very clear requirement, knowing exactly what you need and articulate it. Then you need to understand the specifics and vet your candidates. I had good and bad experiences on these sites and bad ones were normally because I was not clear what I want and what is required or if I wanted to find something cheap. If you want to pay $5.00 you get the effort for $5.00. So for $5.00 I use it when I need to do SEO's, flood web to increase browser clicks. .I never pay $5.00 if I need to edit or publish... (more)

You know, there are some amazing writers on Fiverr and Upwork that have nothing to do with the price. It is finding those nuggets of gold and hanging on to them. It looks cheap to us because we are in the US.

I have paid thousands of dollars for big guru crap that did not perform or get any results.

Hi Vivian,

You've mentioned that one can find help for link building on Fiverr. Do you know if these links are "white hat, or a spam? I don't know how to make sure they do a proper job. Any suggestions?

Also, I need to expand some content on each of our products categories. But I could not find a person who knows much about Russian products. The ones I found did not bother to search for any info online. In description of amber (stone) one wrote that amber grows on tree... I agree with Trish, and found the person I worked with was quite incompetent.

Fiverr is hit and miss. You have to ask for references when you screen people to help you because anyone can sign up. Due diligence pays off. No such thing as a Cheap or Free lunch. professionals will have a higher fee and that's how it should be. in fact, I'm considering joining it myself. Good luck.

Your agency should factor this into the prices you pay.

I have never billed a customer for "Advertising and marketing help" I bill them for the advertising they purchase, my profit is structured therein.

FWIW depending on your industry plan 10%, or better, of your gross profits will return to your advertising efforts.

Most startups can ignore TV, radio, magazines, media buys and billboards as advertising.

By working with people who truly want to help YOU succeed and not simply siphon off your limited capital. When what you DON'T need is eliminated and when a clear concept of what you do need is developed, your business will have a better chance of survival, especially in terms of conserving limited funds for more important expenditures or simply to have in reserve, which is always a critical consideration for a new venture as it faces unexpected financial challenges. If you have any doubt as to whether the people you are speaking with have your best interests... (more)

Madlyn, a good rule to follow is 25 to 50% should go to advertising and marketing. The reason this number is high is the cost of marketing and advertising outlets (direct mail, billboards, TV, Radio, magazines / print media and digital advertising).

Each has it's advantages and disadvantages. I'm not a big supporter of direct mail. It does have it's place but it's not how to advertise anymore, same with print media unless you're a huge corporation.

Without knowing what business you're in, I can't offer advice. That's unprofessional. You can PM me and I'll be... (more)
