I think blogging is certainly an advantage because you can get better known from your peers and viewed as an expert in your field if you're able to blog about the findings you've had in your projects and contribute to problems reported in StackOverflow or contribute to open source code repositories when you see a means to enhance the code for your own purpose and for adding benefits for others.
