Not sure it's beneficial for everybody, because there are so many e-books out there now that people just push out because it sounds good although they lack real value. They're frequently just used as bait (in exchange for email addresses) so spammers can build "lists" and databases on the cheap.

Having said that, during the early adolescence of our business, I used to get a lot of questions on marketing from people planning to enter our industry as "brokers". After spending hours on the phone, trying to help them, I thought it might be more helpful (and... (more)

Hi Pam, as Linwood notes, it all depends on these factors:

-Topic and how it applies to the business. Ebooks can take too much effort to read to be just for fun. What will I learn (as the business) in a short time that will benefit my decision making?

-how to get it. Have seen many businesses ask for more information that the IRS to download their silly papers/eBooks which look like they were written for kids.

-What's it's purpose in the sale cycle? I am a firm believer that all collateral marketing materiel (like this) needs to have a purpose. A direct purpose.... (more)

Mark - love your point on how some people write an "ebook" that looks like a child wrote it. Or, it's 3 pages and they call it a book. I think an ebook can be beneficial, but the reader needs to gain something from it if they are going to spend time reading. I was recently disappointed when I downloaded an ebook from a Dr. and it was just a few pages and I didn't get much out of it. My point - be sure you are creating value for your customer in everything you do!

An ebook can be massively beneficial to growing your email list, which, in turn, can help scale your business.

If you know exactly who your target audience is and their most frequently asked questions, you can create an ebook/guide around that and market it to them in exchange for an email.

Then you plug those emails into your email list and gently market to them.

So yes, creating an ebook can be beneficial. Just make sure it will be of actual value to your ideal client.

Hey Pam. I'm not quite sure how to answer that. I suppose it could be of benefit if the eBook highlighted industry trends, best practices, etc. At which point the business executive would/could possibly position themselves as an industry expert of some sort.
