What Are You Using for Free Anti Virus Software?

By James Murphy · Posted on Thursday, August 17, 2017 · Tagged in General Discussion

I'm kind of wondering what everyone else is using. We use the Paid Version of Avast. Also I'm providing a Link in case you've never looked at it.

Just wanted to let you all know that we've been testing Avast and it's still one of the most popular Anti-Virus Programs out there for good reason.

Download Avast Free Antivirus

Avast

I installed Avast Free Antivirus for Windows and it's great. Goodbye paid-for antivirus! Download now to stay safe.

I've worked with companies that struggle with this question and have deployed Avast and other solutions but I think in this day and age what I really encourage clients to do is make sure they have upgraded all their PCs to Windows 10 - remove all that free crap and paid trial Norton/Mcafee crap and turn on Windows Defender. I know that the old Windows Defender (and Windows Security Essentials before it) weren't taken very seriously but with 10 - it's a solid product - as good as anything free or paid (and it's free). Keep Windows up to date with weekly... (more)

Perfect advice, ensure that the OS and all software are updated and use Defender. For Malware, run a Malwarebytes scan (free as well) weekly or monthly, depending on your usage.

Windows 10? I'm curious. Were you an early adapter of Windows 10? We were and it was a NIGHTMARE. It took forever to turn off all their snoopware and the system was a hackers dream! One of my friends even did a YouTube Video about what you had to Turn Off on Windows 10 also Windows only gave you 30 days to test it out after which it erased all the files needed to restore your machine back to what ever you had on before and even then they did not replace any custom settings or any of the custom drivers needed for overclocking so they pretty much hosed your... Sophos offers a free AV solution for home computers that is pretty decent. Panda A/V also seems to work, but remember that you get what you pay for. I personally utilize Webroot SecureAnywhere for my business clients. It isn't free, but it is reasonably priced.

I don't know why but I pretty much banned anyone from using Panda when we had our training center business. That closed down in 2007 and I've forgotten why we didn't like it.

Windows Defender (on Windows 10 systems) is becoming a more solid program BUT still doesn't compete with a PAID antivirus. For PAID antivirus...we look at Vipre Advanced Security, Avast Premier, Emsisoft Anti-Malware or Bitdefender Internet Security. For FREE antivirus...Avast Free Antivirus is a good product...but remember, you get what you pay for. Along with installing antivirus, we install the FREE version of Malwarebytes (this can be upgraded to the PAID Premium version for even better protection AS LONG AS you write exclusions into your Antivirus and... Good comment. Antivirus is up to the individual. Nice to see someone else taking an "Old Fashioned Approach" to customer service.
