Business Owners, What Do You Look for When Picking Insurance?

By Sheila Kennon · Posted on Friday, June 30, 2017 · Tagged in Research

Do you go with the most comprehensive policy available or do you go with the cheapest policy you can find? If you buy based on value, like company reputation or coverage options, what influences you decision to go with one company over another.

Buying business insurance can be tricky. An insurance professional/agency is your best bet. While shopping price sound like a good idea, the time you'll find out about what isn't covered under that cheap policy you bought is when you have a claim.

Unless you're an insurance professional, don't suppose that you will understand the nuances of what coverage you need in and in what amounts you should have it. Besides commercial insurance for your business your advisor will be able to give you information about worker's compensation, professional liability,... (more)

I totally agree with your comments. I always look for an agent that has been in the business for a while and it is mandatory that he specializes in my industry.

When it comes to paying a claim it depends on the carriers policy on how fast or how slow they will pay a claim. The other factor that comes into play is whether you get a season Claims Adjuster.

In our case, it was a company that would actually insure us. None of them understands our business and so far in 6 years we have not talked to an insurance agent that is flexable enough to ensure all of what we would like our business to be.

You have hit the nail on the head. A trusted advisor with experience and understanding how your business works and what you want it to be is invaluable. As the owner of a property casualty insurance agency we steer away from certain classes of businesses because that is not where our expertise lays.

This is a very broad question and much depends on the type of insurance you are looking for. Requirements for General insurance (Property and Casualty) versus Life and Health insurance are very different and thus what you need to be considered is quite different. As well agents in these classes of insurance are not the same, rarely does an agent in General insurance deal with Health and vice versa.

I look for a business policy that limits my mechanical breakdown costs and provides great customer service. In Tucson, cost of AC breakdown can be very high. Monsoon season sees a lot of lightening strikes and our ACs are on the roof. I turn to Tom Tatro at State Farm for over the top customer service.

As a business owner you need to ask the insurance agent/carrier 3 very important questions:

1) How do I protect myself from my clients and the general public?

2) How do I protect myself from my own employees?

3) Which carrier is going to pay, pay the fastest, and minimize my involvement in the process?
