Good Financial Planners and Advisors sell advice, not products. There have been too many occasions where individuals who presented themselves as such and then tried to sell me insurance or securities issues. I did encounter someone a long time ago who was my tax-preparer and had an extensive background in finance. He asked for my financial plan. I presented one I (with my MBA-Finance) had prepared. Most of them really don't care about the average investor! They are more concerned with millionaires and the fees they can make from managing their assets or commissions made on securities they sell! I'm looking for a Financial Planner that will accept a 10% yearly commission on my gains only. If I make money, he makes money!

I agree with Jamie and William. It's hard to convince someone they need a financial planner if they can't see beyond what they don't have now. FP's need to find a way to demonstrate that "all is not lost" just because you're not in a great position right now.

But, having said that, I personally had an awful (I repeat, AWFUL) experience with my first financial planner and was quite convinced afterwards that anything I did on my own couldn't possibly be worse than what he did. Any and all trust went right out the window.
