There are many answers to this question depending on a lot of different factors. Word of mouth is always the best. My answer would be a bit biased as I do Video Production & Marketing. So to start with I would recommend Video Marketing to improve your Search Engine Rankings. Once you are ranking and you have several types of Videos out there then I would start slow with some of the other Social Media marketing. Once you find what works, then scale it up. Thanks for asking that question! It got my attention, as I would like to know how other photographers answer.

I use both Facebook and Instagram. However, I get most of my clients the old fashioned way, by word of mouth. I try to keep my Instagram account filled with only my professional shots, with an occasional person one here and there. I took a bit of time to research the best hashtags to use, and post them as a comment so as not to clutter up my post. ~ My Two Cents ~

During the last decade, social media has been the 'it' referral system for businesses, but now almost everyone is nearly sick of it, if not already completely so. Everyone is posting, all the time, about everything and the massive number of posts and pix and clips have congealed into the biggest backlog of mixed media in human history, much of which is not even seen.

There is simply not enough time to look at it all, and combing through for relevant material is a now full-time, salaried occupation.
