Referrals are how we get business. We don't advertise, chase prospects or use lead gen services. We rely on our existing clients to refer others to us. That's because we have built a referral system and network.

When we are interviewing a prospective client (we don't work with just anyone) we explain that IF we both agree that we are compatible and will work together, we explain our system.

We tell them that we want our relationship to go well beyond any end to our relationship and be as friendly in the future as we are today. We tell them that we expect our... (more)

David, at first I was put off by your comment how you expect your clients to refer others on a regular basis. However, I was glad that I discovered that your company does the same thing for your clients.

It is sad, but it seems as if most businesses do not know the value of referrals or they do not really appreciate them.

I used to think business were crazy when I heard they pay out commissions as high as 50% or more for sales. Once I learned about Affiliate Marketing, I discovered that it was not uncommon for an affiliate to receive 100% commission from the... (more)

This is an awesome reply.

"Then, once we actually become collaborative, we have a system of loyalty services we shower upon our clients. Everything from a small gift to a dinner out. Constant affection and respect. We provide "unexpected extras" for them, their children and even their pets. We get to know them that much, so that we can be top of mind with them at all times. They are happy to refer because they love us."

I love it.

We've done this for many years now, we allow our clients children help us with projects we do for them, we have also taken care of their pets, my wife will take professinal photo's of their pets and send them to them to print.

Sounds like a wonderful idea. However, what would you suggest for a business that is based on confidentiality? As a mental health therapist, I am unable to socialize outside of the office with my clients and their families, as well as give gifts.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Being in the appreciation business I really appreciated your position David. Making long term relationships with our clients is way better than going "Virtual Fishing" for leads.

Thanks for the insights.

I feel that if you have a professional relationship with the person referring you then you have gained their trust not only as a person but also as a professional. If you are being referred to then obviously you are making sure that you take care of your clients. I would not expect a referral to a friend or family member if I was unprofessional and did not think what they were requesting for services or products as being important to them. I always want to make sure my potential clients feel comfortable doing business with me and trust that I have their best... (more)
