They are both important in creating specifically a referral and repeat customer sale funnel.
One of my networking colleagues (mortgage company owner) in our Christian Business Partners group uses both an email video (educational interview format), and a printed template type newsletter with 'current event/trending information' for potential homeowners, that go to only his database of customers and previous proposals.

They are both effective over a period of time (as a nurturing process, it doesn't happen overnight; it's also based on the timing of the client's need).
