I take vacations, but always have to work some. My business depends on bidding future business and I don't want employees knowing what I charge for projects/profits. Therefore, I have to do all the bidding. It's just part of being a small business owner.

Permission. Before I was a business owner, I was an employee. In those roles as an employee, it was ingrained in me that we must ASK before taking time off and that it is only available in limited lengths of time.

One could say that we must rewire our brains to recognize when we need down time - both on a daily basis (breaks) and longer term vacations. To Stacy's point, it's also about creating processes and systems to keep ourselves in check.

Think of it as an investment in your well being as a business owner. You cannot bring your best to your business if you need a break. I would advise you to plan your year in advance to include holidays off and vacation time. Your relationship with your family and the memories you are building will last a lifetime. Your clients will appreciate your values if you present it in a way that is not apologetic but healthy and wise.

Thanks Dolores, I see you have a kind heart just by the way you write. I have presented it with the best intentions. What my lawyer told me 12 years ago is true. " no matter what you try to do for people, 15% of people you will not be pleased, no matter what you do for them". So far I've found that to be true. I offer a free $200. dollar Travel Gift Card, with no catch or obligation to join. And people still take it wrong, I guess thw world is not as happy as I thought. Well let me know if your interested in one, here's my site, name and email : ... (more)

This is easy... you don't have systems in place or processes so that everyone knows what to do next without direction. Then get yourself a Virtual Assistant to do the back office work. I left for 3 weeks of sailing and only checked email twice but i checked in with my Virtual Assistant from Summit VA Solutions once each morning... it was incredible.

Failure to Go On A Vacation ... Especially small business owners are often understaffed (deficient in trusted department managers), often under funded and often fail to properly prioritize with a broad-brushed perspective and balanced strokes! We had a family saying ... "A change Is As Good As A Switch!" Why do we go to bed every night? Smart enough to do that? Small business owners, sometimes not! Been there! Done that!
