Statistically the it takes about 2 years from a start up scenario. I spent too much on advertising when I should have allocated more time for networking and social media. Leaning on friends and family is important starting out. Be specific who your target market is. Don't use the shot gun approach. Web sites are good tools but at the end of the day is who you know not so much what you know. A phone call and/or face to face meeting can be more productive than an e-mail. A good relationship is more valuable than a commission. Be careful about some of the networking groups. They may or may not benefit you.
