(more) First I would like to point out just how cut-throat this business is. I have lost many clients to other companies that ended up providing less. It only takes a few minutes with a lead that isn't sure about their current site to convince them they are being taken advantage of and should go with them for all services or even worse just a part. There is so much involved beyond the website that is just as important. ICANN requirements, DNS, eMail, performance, analytics, keywords the list can go on. I could go on and on about the clients not understanding IMAP or POP works can create just enough frustration on both ends that the client is easily swayed. When someone asks how much does a website cost the first answer is always; it depends on what your needs are. Do you need a database, a portal, ecommerce or just need a static site with "home, about, Services and contact" that gets updated now and then? Most of my clients payed very little to have me build the site but they pay a monthly fee again depending on what is needed. WordPress, sorry I don't like it. It's too restricting for my taste. I do understand that it can be a very good tool for a static website and as long as customization isn't too deep the clients may be able to update the site themselves. I come from a programming background (ColdFusion) and can't stand it when I need to build a web application and I am stuck within WordPress or another CMS. A custom built website built outside a CMS is just as effective and far better for future growth and many times built just as fast. In most cases and what I try hard to sell to my clients is they don't need to understand how every thing works on the back-end. They only need to know that the company they hire to manage it knows. I provide a full service to them that includes managing their domains and all the services it needs. I build their website with the idea that they may need to grow that site to be more interactive. I make sure that site is hosted on servers and a backbone that is fast, reliable and that I have administrative access as well as 24/7 Network/Server admins that are on site and not in India. I am not out to snake a client from someone. I see absolutely no need to offer to re-build a perfectly good website just because it could mean a new client. I don't sugarcoat or lie to a new client to try and sway them my way and I don't treat my current clients that way either. I tell them how it is and I am not afraid to tell them "No". But I am willing to bet it's why I have managed to keep most the clients I have and had for nearly 18 years. That all said... if your current provider isn't returning calls, emails and not doing updates you send them you need to switch. But be prepared to go through the migration process of moving the site, changing registrars, email and so on and that could take a few months especially dealing with the registrar or a company that wants to make it difficult to move. Whoever you go with just don't change horses in the middle of the stream.
