The primary focus of the Japanese American Citizens League has been, and continues to be, to protect and fight for the civil and human rights of ALL PEOPLE in and outside of New Mexico. However, the organization also recognizes the importance of education and promotion of the Japanese culture since New Mexico is a multicultural state. The Japanese American Citizens League has therefore been active in working with others in the community to promote the brother/sisterhood of all cultures in New Mexico.

Membership to the organization has been open to all, with non-Japanese also holding leadership positions of the Board of Directors, including the presidency. Members of the Japanese American Citizens League strive to be "Better Americans in a Greater America."
