Unity is a positive path for spiritual living that appeals to those who are spiritual but not religious. We are a welcoming and inclusive community and we engage in service to the greater Ames Community through our Angel Garden Project with the PAR Program. We also support the Youth of the YSS/AMP program through the Dream Seed Scholarship. If you want an alternative spiritual path without dogma, guilt or traditional Christianity, you are in the right place! WELCOME TO UNITY, WELCOME HOME!

We were pioneered by Rev. Barry Vennard and supported in our growth by Unity of Des Moines, our sponsoring ministry.

Our spiritual community, Unity of Ames, is my sanctuary. We have a meditation for 30 minutes every Wed. night, and that is a sacred time and space. I also meditate daily in my study at home with a candle for about 20 minutes each morning before I do anything else. My meditation practice is based on Vipassana meditation which is to focus on the breath. This practice has proved invaluable to me to maintain a sense of Presence, of Self, of love in the face of whatever comes my way each day. When I encounter conflict, dissension, hostile driving on I-35 between Ames & DSM, I remember to just breathe and repeat the mantra, "Love is present here" again and again. It has served me well to stay in a centered place no matter what I encounter and to stay out of the weeds of what is not peace. I love the north shore of Lake Superior, Grand Marais, MN in the summertime for a deeply spiritual place to refresh and renew.

Dear Hot and Bothered by BO, I agree that a conference with your HR person would be a good starting point. That is the person who gets paid to handle this kind of delicate matter. You are in a small office and there a number of people who are offenders, so I am guessing you are outnumbered. Bringing back good old fashioned dress codes for work might be one option for the boss or the HR person. Other options include if allowed, burning a candle which has a pleasant scent (Yankee candles are in jars and last a long time). Using essential oils under your nose can also help improve your personal sniff space. Spraying air freshener before these folks arrive at work, or using some kind of air freshener system is also a good option. Diffusers are good for this as well as small fans that circulate the air and dilute the aromas. As a last resort, a cotton hankie tied around your wrist, saturated with good perfume to sniff as you need is an option. If you have a good working relationship, then humor, spraying air freshener and saying "this place smells like a locker room" cause you all bike to work! Just a thought.... How can I help you make that dream come true??? My joy is to help you make your travel dreams come true.....how can I do that for you? With my services, you are not just a number, you are a person to whom I listen and I actually answer the phone when you call, it is not an endless tape loop. Highlight your personal service and non-cookie cutter approach. "Do you have special travel needs? I can help you work out the seemingly endless details of planning a trip that accommodates your (wheelchair, hearing impairment, dietary) needs, etc. Let me help take the stress out of the trip!
And then ask for referrals and put testimonials on your website and FB pages. Let your two clients say why they were happy with your services....you too, can have that sense of satisfaction! Ask everyone to really pay attention to air quality and airtime. Does what you are putting into the air with what you say aloud or with your non-verbal behavior stink up the place or does it help to clear the air? The second part is how much air time are you taking and is it fair to everyone...

Air quality/airtime can be a non-judgemental mantra that asks everyone to self-monitor and to come up higher because it is Christmas.....
We are having a Healing Fair which is similar. We are inviting vendors and charging them for a table. They are able to provide services and charge for those services which add to the benefits for them. All participants pay a nominal $5.00 fee to attend. This is our third year for this event. ...

If you believe that you offer clients and customers a quality product at a reasonable price backed by service, that is what you will put into the energy stream. If you are holding the thought of how can I get people to buy something that is of inferior quality, how can I rip them off, then you can expect that to come around at some point and bite you back. Spiritual awareness awakens you to the reality that what you put out into the Universe usually comes back to you, so make it good if you want that to come back to you.

I do all the time because the more people who find a spiritual path, the more people have a chance to awaken and build a true sense of community and connection. We once had a garage sale at Unity the same weekend as the UCC church just down the street. They sent folks to us and we sent folks to them and we all benefitted. In fact, the UCC Church donated 20% of their proceeds to the Dream Seed Scholarship, a cause championed by Unity and the Interfaith Community. I recognize that we cannot meet everyone's spiritual needs, but that doesn't mean there aren't other places that can, so we all benefit when we support each other.

We had a small group of people who were attending the Unity Church in Des Moines. They decided that it was time to have a Unity Church in Ames and began that community 25 years ago this year. We will be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year in July. I am always searching for ways to attract newcomers to Unity of Ames. It is a wonderful spiritual community and our take on Christianity is vastly different from even mainline Progressive Protestant churches. I am open to all ways of reaching people and we do have an online following. I have not yet used Instagram or Twitter, but we are on Facebook and have a website, which is where a lot of folks do find us.
