BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS - ALASKA

About Us

Mission: To empower and inspire the diverse youth of Alaska to reach their full potential by offering them hope, opportunity, and a safe environment.

Clubhouse
Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska Club programming offers a before and after school experience to youth ages 7 to 18 years old, to assure success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors, with all members on track to achieve our priority outcomes:
• Academic Success – graduating from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment
• Character & Leadership – being an engaged citizen who is involved in the community, registered to vote, and modeling strong character
• Healthy Lifestyles – adopting a healthy diet, practicing healthy choices, and making a lifelong commitment to fitness
The Clubs aim to provide an outcome-driven Club experience for positive youth development. The five key elements for youth to experience success are: a safe, positive environment, fun, supportive relationships, opportunities and expectations, and recognition. These key elements are implemented through high-yield activities, targeted programs, and encouraging regular attendance to ensure the outcomes are achieved.

Athletics
Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska Athletics programs offer basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football, and indoor soccer to Anchorage area youth. Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska Athletics programming emphasizes safety, fun, fitness, teamwork, leadership, and skill development. While competition and winning may be desirable results, they are not the priorities for BGCA Athletics programs. Our coaches are encouraged to empower each child to develop his or her talents throughout participation, fair play, sportsmanship, cooperation, teamwork and effort with the goal being to help each child develop a sense of competence, usefulness, and belonging. Every child who participates in our sports programs on a regular basis, with encouragement from the coaching staff, parents, and his or her peers, should enhance their self-esteem, confidence, and ability to work cooperatively with others.

Child Development Center
The Boys & Girls Club Child Development Center is a licensed childcare facility located in our Woodland Park campus and Turnagain Elementary and serves children and youth ages 6 weeks through 12 years. As an early learning center, the programming focuses on preparing children to develop socially, emotionally, and academically as they grown into their school-age years. The current curricula include art, music, block play, dramatic play, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, math, and science as well as activities that support social and emotional learning.

How We Got Started

Incorporated in November of 1966 in Anchorage, Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska began as the “Boys Club of Alaska.” The very first athletics programs included Babe Ruth Baseball, intramural basketball, and an after-school program at NorthStar Elementary. In 1974, sports were offered to girls in the Anchorage area. The first stand-alone Clubhouse opened in 1980 in Anchorage in Spenard’s old Woodland Park Elementary School. The Child Development Center started in 1984 to care for the children of staff at the Woodland Park campus. The program has evolved into a licensed childcare serving children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Statewide expansion began in 1995 and today the organization serves children and youth at 23 Clubhouse programs at Mountain View Community Center, Northeast Community Center (Muldoon/Anchorage), Woodland Park, Eagle River, Mat-Su, Goose Bay, Fairbanks, Saxman, Kake, Klawock, Metlakatla, Utqiagvik, Kotzebue, Noorvik, Selawik, Utqiagvik.
