As far back as I can remember, I needed to be creating something. Constantly. Whether it drawing or coloring as a kid, to cooking, logos, or vinyl crafts as adult even cleaning (making a clear space) makes me feel good. I need to create to keep sane and balanced.
As a kid, I loved drawing or coloring. As I got older I took all the art classes I could in school. My uncle ran a silk screen business for a while, and I remember LOVING being in the shop. The smells, the sounds, the snack drawer. It felt at home for me, peacefully almost. Like I knew I had to do something in this realm when I grew up. I watched him design on his computer in the shop and I think that was the first time I was introduced to any type of graphic design. I was hooked. I couldn’t get passed the feeling of taking something in my head, putting it in a computer, and then having a finished product in my hands.
Being from a small area, graphic design classes themselves weren’t offered in the high school. So getting to college I knew I had to take these classes. So I took the classes I could and got my degree A.A.S in Visual Communications.
Opportunities for me where few and far between for a long time. I got a hook up at a job from a friend that knew I knew how to use Illustrator pretty well, and that landed me a job designing aircraft interior and exteriors refurbishments at a small aviation service center. I worked there doing various things moving around departments for almost 5 years, then downsizing happened and I opted to stay at home with my at the time, 3 month old baby.
As a side gig for extra cash for baby related items, I did crafts or logos to put extra cheddar in our pockets. I'm recently trying to make that work more steady over the years.
But the fear is drowned out when I get that client. The ones that are starting out and getting their logo started. Starting to see their dreams get closer to reality. I love working with the little guy. The mom and pops. They are grateful, excited, and listen to my ideas. We collaborate! I'm not the designer who sits up on the high horse and says I’m the one with the degree(s) you should listen to me. I don’t want to work for someone, I want to work WITH someone. I’ll give them my design experienced opinion, balance, color, unity, etc. But I want the logo to be a reflection of my clients personality and who they are.
Getting downsized from a company in 2015 and turning into a full time stay at home parent lead me to chase my dreams of building by own business. Tired of working for companies where I don’t feel appreciated or valued becoming my own boss is a trying journey I am ready to take.
