How We Got Started

I began doing photo assignments for national and local magazines while doing social work, and volunteering as an editor/photographer for a union newspaper, in Detroit during the 1970s. My first travel photo and writing trips as a professional were to China in 1976 and 1979, Cuba in 1978, and Africa in 1981.

Even images produced as art are now generally treated as cheap commodities. Decades ago, a photo workshop instructor during a session on the techniques of lighting told me "if photography was easy, everyone would be doing it."  Well, technology has made it extremely easy and nearly everyone is now doing it.

I wouldn't have done anything differently. Even the mistakes I made were either valuable learning lessons or turned out better results than I could have expected. I believe aiming high and taking risks was a good strategy in retrospect. (more) I wouldn't have done anything differently. When I was building my photo tours business I relied on word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients. I wanted prospects to know that despite tour prices generally lower than my competition, they could expect a quality experience with excellent photo opportunities and some adventure on my tours. I do what I want, am very good at it, and it beats working for a living. And it was once quite profitable. (more) I do what I want, am very good at it, and it beats working for a living. And it was once quite profitable.
