I can say that as I am of the age where these things simply don't matter. If you do your job well, enjoy what you are doing and keep your personal life just that---personal, who needs to worry. If you don't enjoy what you are doing or the gossip is interfering with your ability to perform your duties or work, go find another another place to work. Life is simply to short to worry about matters like this. Good luck!

You keep moving forward by learning to decrease unnecessary spending, continue to open doors via sales/marketing and if you stop, you die. I don't think it prudent to have an 'employee' or independent contractor simply run the business to handle past clients or whomever walks through the door. Is it time to consider having a 'Partner' or someone capable of taking the ball and running with it. The original owner can still be involved, when the time is right, and perhaps have a sale or lease agreement with the new person so that the two of them can take the business to the next level when/if the time is right.  That new person should have some 'skin in the game' as well. Otherwise bad things can happen and the original owner won't be in a position to do much about reversing a bad trend. With Vet's and Furloughed Gov't workers abound, there has to be someone with real talent and empathy to move the ball forward and would be excited about the opportunity.

One 'trick' that works when a longer ad or copy is involved so that the 'trick' is not easily caught, is to take a work and purposefully misspell it. Nothing big, just take and i and an e and reverse their position. It is easy to miss such a word and if your copy shows up elsewhere, containing the 'trick' you have grounds for legal action.

It may NOT be true about all industry's, but in the Tour biz, Social Media rules. It is such a daily hassle to try and keep up, but the bottom line is not only having content worth reading, but the new movement is now towards video. As an example, regarding a tour it is certainly old school to post something about a particular tour and possibly even include some reviews (a must if you have them). Today, however, folks seem to like a very SHORT video. It gives the traveler a sense of what you are about and what they'll be seeing/learning and that makes a big difference. I am presently NOT big on the instant contact whereby a guest sees something and wants to book it right on the spot and start a tour. We are not a biz with a published depart time, other than what we post as daily start times on the Internet, as we are not a train, a bus, etc that can depart at will. Having said that, the use of Video is still the most effect new means of drawing attention and therefore business to us.

We all believe we provide great service, integrity, etc, so the question from a practical point of view is how do you keep past customers/clients coming back? With might and right on your side, fair pricing, etc, we find that it is critical to keep your name and company in front of your past customer/client/guest. The trick is to NOT be intrusive, meaning you beat them down with newsletters, texts, etc. We try to alert that target market about something 'new' we are doing, such as a new tour in our case, or highlight something quite newsy and work that into your message. It does not need to be long so just a quick note or offer or time of year special/review, etc. It could very well spur interest in doing something they had not previously considered.

As they say, 'no tickey, no washy' so we get our Tour fee in full, prior to the tour or a 50% deposit for the special stuff, such as weddings, corporate events, etc and the balance a week prior to that event. The last thing a travel planner, wedding planner, etc wants to have happen is to lose their transportation arrangements just before the event. Works for us!

We require, therefore, either a 50% deposit when our invoice is accepted and the balance due 1-2 weeks prior to performing our service. We make it VERY clear, no ticky, no washy. They pay us as agreed or we do not serve their wedding or corporate event. With long time clients, we alter this policy as we have great working relationships, earned by a history of working together, and allow payment AFTER the event as long as it is paid in a reasonable period of time. Works for our type of biz.
