My business was face and body painting, and although BJ and Cody can do their business virtually, I cannot.  I had to pivot to survive.  I now help artists and entertainers, who used to work in Covid-Crushed businesses figure out what to do next to earn a living and continue to do what they love.  (more) My business was face and body painting, and although BJ and Cody can do their business virtually, I cannot.  I had to pivot to survive.  I now help artists and entertainers, who used to work in Covid-Crushed businesses figure out what to do next to earn a living and continue to do what they love.

They pass out my contact information and if the client wants them again, I schedule them into that client, preferentially.  In New Jersey, I have worked to raise the skills and standards of face painters, so that all our clients can discriminate between talented artists and hobbyists.  That creates opportunities for growth for all of us.

Absolutely.  In my industry, you have to tell people to put them on silent, and then you have to tell them to take the call outside the room, if it vibrates.  In most professional settings, cell phones should not even be visible, since it is rude to be texting and reading while a meeting is going... I provide artistic entertainment for all types of special events. So face painting, festival looks, fantasy eye designs, Venetian masks, tattoos etc. My experience with family oriented comedy is that often times it turns out to be not so family-oriented. If the sales fell though, followup and ask them why they did not choose you. Or "what would it have taken to win your business." I ask my clients all the time and then I see if that fits with my business strategy or violates it. Some of the clients I DON"T want, so it is okay if they steer a different direction. But I ask them after the decision is made.

I don't care if my prospects price shop and I tell them up front that I am not the least expensive. Nor am I the most expensive. I provide quotes all the time and followup up constantly. Be clear on who you are and what is your ideal client.

Then I would network with venues, and leave the some information to share (if they do not have a planner already). Connect with caterers and florists, since they will get the call for home parties, and know hosts who may need help tying the details together. Friends and family are your best referral sources. Chamber of Commerce, Women's Entrepreneurial groups, serve as a sponsor for some of these business groups so you can showcase your ideas.
