How We Got Started

A retail bond trader on Wall Street, I preferred to fix problems and organizing things so that I and others were more productive. I enjoyed getting down to the nitty gritty of problems, working with others to fix it, put written procedures in place, teach others the new system, watch how much it saves - in time and money and move on.

I left Corporate America to start a Wall Street consulting firm but went back because I wasn't ready to make the shift from getting a pay check to running business.

A car accident left me with much introspection time. Long story short, In 1995 found an article about this new field of "coaching". I KNEW that was my calling.

After 20 years as a Life Coach and a Business Strategist, I'm still enjoying what I do but want to do more speaking and reach more people. I work with clients for a year or two, help them shift their mindset from owning a practice to running a business. They systematize, grow their firms, and live better.

I ask.  Every 4 months I ask clients how I can do things better.  When they end with me, I do the same.   And I do the same when I start.   As a business coach, I followed the format of my mentor and the coaches around me.  Clients called me, mainly because there was a good chance I'd be in one... However, what I learned was that most of my clients wanted me to call them.  They also read things sent in the mail vs. online.  So I send things, and my blog has a feature where they can print what I've written to read later.

Yes for before,  Yes for after.  What they'll do is ask is last paycheck and dates for before, and same as after.  They have a complex way to figure things out.  I had a client just keep submitting paychecks and information.   Ends up making $159 a week (before)  (more) Yes for before,  Yes for after.  What they'll do is ask is last paycheck and dates for before, and same as after.  They have a complex way to figure things out.  I had a client just keep submitting paychecks and information.   Ends up making $159 a week (before)

I would find a different place to "park".  You don't want to be connected, in any way to a dead beat.   Others have given you great advice as to how to get payment.  (more) I would find a different place to "park".  You don't want to be connected, in any way to a dead beat.   Others have given you great advice as to how to get payment.

What does your agreement with the advisor say?  Example, my contract talks about me never giving out client information, keeping it private, not even saying that they are my clients.  But they can say I'm their coach. One plan I used, with written permission of the person whose plan I was helping create.  I sometimes use scenarios of my clients, but never mention city, names, etc. (again, unless I have written consent). Not everyone operates that way.  Which is why you need to look at the agreement you signed with them.  In general, I would be pissed if someone did that without permission.  Talk to them, and most likely fire them.

I find that most business owners, including myself rebrand either in year 2 or 5.   I rebranded and it didn't work, so I did it again and it has.  (more) I find that most business owners, including myself rebrand either in year 2 or 5.   I rebranded and it didn't work, so I did it again and it has.

Having worked with many in the accounting industry, I'm thinking you're making it harder than it is by taking on any client who breaths.  Chances are you're also underpaid.   So I would "restart" with best practices 1) Nail a niche 2) Join AICPA 3) create a business plan (and execute it) 4)...
