In two cases the bosses and bullies were females, and in both cases, they were shocked when I quit on the spot! No one should have to put up with that type of nonsense. No paycheck is worth selling your soul for! I gave them both plenty of chances to learn to respect and treat everyone fairly, they just could not do it! I treated them both like gold, I still can't believe how I was treated in the long run...

Think about why you choose to shop where you do, get your hair done where you do, etc. We make choices based on the relationships we establish. Relationships are crucial! I have given you some information out of several of my books below, just short paragraphs related to your question. I hope this is helpful to you!  The International Coaching Federation uses 11 core competencies which are the standard of most coaches, related to relationships with clients is right near the top! Co-Creating the relationship Establishing trust and intimacy with the client. Coaching Presence (From ICF Core Competencies) Pay attention to your tones and inflections. Say your words clearly and slowly so that the client can understand. Don’t rapid fire like a used-car salesman. If in person, make sure that you smile and show warmth. When using a script, keep it simple and direct, don’t sound rehearsed. Heave confidence, be polite, and be credible. People buy on emotion, they like great customer service and relationships with someone they can relate to, or talk with and trust at a company. Remember that active listening is the most powerful communication tool that human beings have. Listen to the client don’t cut them off.  If they’re talking, they won’t hang up if on the phone, in person they will stay engaged. Make sure you introduce yourself and your company if you’re talking to the client for the first time. We all have a need to feel connected to others. It makes us feel secure and comfortable to be a part of a social community. Help clients feel as though they will be a part of a community when they close. When you build a community, they will drive your business for you. Give client’s something that makes them feel part of the community. Sharing stories with others affect the senses and emotions. This will fire the client’s emotional brain. (Same area of the brain that closes.) Helps people feel like they have experiences that they haven’t had. Human behavior is driven by the desire for pleasure and the need to avoid all forms of pain. When human beings do something that seems painful it is because they associate pleasure with such an action. You must be able to understand your potential customer; who are they, what influences them? What influences do they already have in their lives? Once you identify who your niche customer is and what is their goal? Then you can move potential clients close to their goal in your message before attempting to close. When you are close to their goal they are very likely to close to achieve their goal. A completed goal equals pleasure; your company equals pleasure. Strong relationships with strategic partners and key referral resources have never been more important.  A company’s reputation and integrity is absolutely critical.

(more) Depending on the type of business an owner or manager is dealing with, these type of problems can be eliminated right from the beginning if you use a contract and/or payment agreement where the customer pays before service.  Many owners are reluctant to ask for the money they are worth for their services on their terms; however, try going to the grocery store and tell them that you will pay them next week! Asking for money has always been difficult for some managers and owners, but customers expect to pay for quality services and products. Many offer a guarantee for thirty to sixty days, so if a customer wants to "beat" the company  out of the money they are one customer, it happens. All we can all do, is do are best to provide the highest quality products and services that we can.  Remember that the difference between the customer making the decision to go to one company over another, when the two are similar, is great customer service! If you are in a situation where you're in the type of business that takes installment payments, or can't get paid in full up front, perhaps the best thing to do is to sell the contract to one of the companies that buys bad debt, at least you will get paid something and it's no longer your problem to worry about. There are of course collection services that you can hire; however, you have to figure out if it's worth it for you.  If they work on a percentage of what they recover then great! I would encourage owners and managers to focus on the positives in their business and build great businesses where you are successful enough that the few who don't pay won't impact your company much.  You can always have your tax people write off any losses.
