Ah, a lead that didn't come to fruition. How to follow up? Well, this is a relationship like any other. We are, after all, dealing with a fellow human. So, in the instance of meeting someone that seems interested in who we are and we find them interesting as well, then we simply stay interested.
There are so many different variables for choosing a new vendor or not. Maybe someone on their side had experience with another vendor and pushed that resource. Maybe budgets were slightly different. Maybe they were just a tad nervous about trying something new.
(I remember one time a prospect told me that they loved my work. She said it was better than my competition, but she chose another vendor because she had never worked with me before. I was baffled. I wondered, "Well, how can we ever work together if you will only work with people with whom you've already worked?!" I realized that for her, this particular job was too big to risk on a new vendor. So, even though she admired my work, the risk in this instance was too much for her.)
The lesson is to not assume. Don't take it personal. People want to feel comfortable. Trying something new is a bit of a risk. You may have a favorite sushi restaurant. Yes, you may want to try this new place that just opened up, but you have to admit, it's a bit of a risk. You probably don't want to take your boss without trying it first. So, it's probably wise to try the new place for a lunch. If it's awful, hey, it didn't cost all that much and you didn't embarrass yourself. It's the same deal.
So, I think, how we deal with not getting a piece of business can be a wonderful opportunity. By staying interested, being patient, being supportive, we actually show the potential client how cool and understanding we are. And that is reassuring.

Relationships.
There is simply nothing more important.
Relationships are the best path to success. The more people we know, the more we can learn, the more opportunities arise, the more repeat business. This is true for all types of relationships, personal and business. Let's face it, the easiest way to find good people is from people you already trust. We all have limited time. We all want to be with people we trust. So, we avoid unnecessary risk and we follow the quickest path.
If you need your house painted, if you need a good car mechanic, if you want to start yoga, where do you start? You start by asking people you know and trust. And once you have a good lead, you pretty much stop looking.
This is absolutely true in business. We are trying to find employees that we can trust. Vendors that are good and fair. Once we find good ones, we cherish them.
Anything new is simply a risk. You may be the most talented person in your field. You could have the most advanced, new technology or the greatest creativity, but if people are not familiar with what you offer, it's still risky.
So, the most effective tool in business is to build more and more relationships.
If I could leverage more of my free time, it would be to meet more people doing interesting things.

Oh, this is one of those loaded questions. Why is it loaded? Because we're not quite sure of the meaning behind the words. The statements has a variety of possible meanings, and they can lead in dramatically different directions. A lot of the direction depends on the type of thing or services under observation.
I'm just looking.
Here's some possible meanings for that heavy phrase.
1) I really am interested in what you offer, but I don't know much about it at this time. So, I am here to learn.
2) I'm looking for this kind of thing, but I am not sure about the exact thing. I know you have some of this type of thing, but you don't have all the choices available. So, I'm here to see what you have. No matter what, I'm going to check other places because I want to know all my choices.
3) I know I want to get one of these things, but I really just want the best price. So, I am here to check things out, see your prices and then I'll go look for the best price.
4) I am interested in this type of thing, but I'm not ready at all to make a purchase. So, I'm here just kind of dream.
Of course, the genre makes a big difference. Let's say it's an real estate, like an open house. Well, if the person is just looking and is in no position to make this purchase, then the agent would be wise to be engaging, charming and try to become their point of contact for the future. The agent would need to make sure that this attention would not usurp a real buyer.
Retail can be a different story. If someone is "just looking" at shoes, but wants to try them on, well, why? Are they just trying to get the right size to order online? Are they just wasting a little time during their lunch break? Obviously, it's not worth the seller's efforts to give time to someone who is just going to go away and order online. But if the client is a lover of shoes and wants to check out your store, well, of course, it be good to make them fall in love with the service and attention offered.
For the client who really wants to see what you have and then see what else is available elsewhere, then there is nothing nefarious going on. It's simply wise to know one's choices. If they are looking for a couch, but not sure what kind... maybe leather, maybe modern, or would a sectional be best? They are "just looking" to learn about the options available.
So, yes, there are very different motives behind the simple words, "I'm just looking." I'd say how to respond, is based on the motive. For all the possible meanings, the correct response is to learn more about the client. A few quick questions can help the sales team know whether there is any chance of a sale today. By asking some questions, the sales team has the chance to build a relationship.
Maybe you really don't have the couch they want, but they may remember how friendly you were and come back for the dining set. Maybe they are not ready to buy the house, but they met a very engaging agent for when they are ready. And maybe they are just looking for the right size of shoe in order to go order online. Well, if they are "just looking", they don't need to try 'em on.
