This is very interesting and I think while trying several things from letters, cold calls, emails, and trade shows.  The best thing I have found is networking with the companies and people that I may want to provide a service.  The issue is when you are in a specialty area your services are not every day and they only need you when they need you so the constant need to be networking and letting people know you are around is critical.
