How We Got Started

I started as a home business, painting sweatshirts. People gravitated to my style. I didn't think Columbus had the type of store that I love to shop in in other cities, so I decided to open a store myself, teaching myself everything from the business side, to the selling side, to finding the right artists that are whimsical like me, and who adore color.

I get to do what I love - and it's NO work at all because I love it! Meeting new artists, exposing fabulous handcrafted jewelry, art and gifts to the public that they normally wouldn't see, and seeing those products gifted to someone else who also thinks they are special. I just quit Yelp. Biggest waste of money. It cost me $700 to get out of the contract. They were charging me $600 for statistics that said 32 people called me, etc. That would be a miracle to get that many inquiries. I did have a brick and mortar for 12 years, and had enough help, but being online is a different animal. My biggest challenge is getting my brand known and knowing how to get my name out there. I do have a web designer, a coder, and an SEO person who work on my site for technical. Absolute necessities. It's a continuing educational challenge for all the rest.

Because no one has the inventory or the eye for "unique" handcrafted jewelry, art and gifts like I do. My customer service is beyond what any retailer could give, and I have a knack for choosing the right gift from the customer's description of the person receiving the gift. (more) I have raised this question many times in my 24 years of selling artists' works. I had a brick/mortar store for 12 years and now sell online (12 years). There is another part to that question as well - when the artists that I represent go to WinterFair (Columbus), a gathering of about 300 artists, and sell the same stuff that I bought wholesale to sell to my customers. Their prices during that show are usually lower than mine and I'll see my customers buy directly from them instead of me. I don't deny anyone to make a living, especially the artist that had the talent to bring it to anyone - including me. But when I spend money to travel to a wholesale show, buy the minimum or more quantity that they require to represent their work (in other words, invest in their talent) and they compete against me by having a retail site --- I don't like it. I would prefer they list the merchants who sell their line on a page (and update it regularly), and refer to those people who are representing them . Many artists don't include online retailers, and I'm wondering why. If you have a retail gallery online, then you know how costly it is to run it. For me, updating and being a one-person "do it all" on the site - from entering products, biographies, and paying to update the site and also paying someone to do the SEO work so your site can be seen, is as costly as paying rent and overhead at a brick/mortar. I guess my simple answer is to ask the artist upfront before buying if they have their own site. Then you can make that decision there and then on how much you want their wares.

I think it's because the hair stylist gets to know my hair and gets to know me. Either she suggests a style, or I bring in a picture, and she tries it. If the cut is even (I've had some where one side is longer or not doing the same thing), if it lasts 3-4 weeks, if my stylist honors the time we have arranged (not consistently late), and if she is pleasant and willing to try new things -- she's for me.

I currently have a question into Alignable about that as I tried to change it to go to my g-mail, but it says "it's in use". Of course it is - it's me. So looking forward to their answer. My business e-mails works on everything else.
