I actually was looking for a job and saw that courier companies in the area were constantly running help wanted ads and thought if there is enough work that they are constantly hiring then there is room for another company. I opened my company with a partner and we trained ourselves, I didn't realize the turnover rate was so high and that was why they were always hiring.
Our rates vary depending on negotiated rates with clients, one time user pays $ 39.50 first 15 miles & then 2.35 per mile there after. We do not charge any fuel surcharges and being in Boston expenses are high.

It definitely affects all businesses, especially small businesses.
My feelings are the cost of living is too high and raising minimum wages just increases the cost of living.

Unless you have some kind of reputation already established or you have received a reference from a trusted "friend" the main thing most companies look at is how much is it going to cost me and how fast is it going to be done. Do you have the capability to do what they want done, if you run trailers and it fits in a car you may not be what they need.
I have learned that you are only as good as your last delivery and if you were five minutes late when a salesman from a competitor walks in to your client's office it could be the end.
