Covid Recovery Gets Shot in the Arm
Last week, you told us how your businesses were doing in the ongoing COVID crisis, and the results were uplifting. There’s a new sense of hope that the pandemic might end in time for summer, making meaningful small business recovery in 2021 a real possibility.
Here are a few green shoots, according to a recent poll of over 10,000 small business owners on Alignable, and what you can do to help your business, and small business as a whole, get ready for recovery.
More Businesses Experience Less Financial Impact
The best news to come from the poll? The number of you who are experiencing significant financial impact from the crisis is finally falling—it dropped by a whopping 34%!
While we’re far from out of the woods, for the first time in over a year, less than 40% of business owners are feeling crushed by COVID.
So what’s contributing to this big drop?
More Vaccinations Means Faster Recovery
In short, the speed and power of widespread vaccination.
Recently, the government picked up the pace of its mass vaccination program. In last month’s Road to Recovery report, we called out them out for not acting fast enough to get vaccines to everyone by the beginning of May.
While we have no idea if they heard us, we do know many in Washington have been reading our monthly Road to Recovery reports, and now they are fast tracking availability!
Thank you for entrusting us with the impacts COVID has had on your business over the past year—your voice is making a difference.
But We Still Have a Way to Go
While we’re seeing positive signs as a result of vaccination, there’s still work to do. Just today I was on a call with a business owner in Waterloo, Canada who shared the situation in the north.
Without vaccine production capability, Canadian citizens and businesses are in a much different position. While roughly 30% of the US population has received at least one dose, only 9% of Canadians have.
We clearly have a long way to go before we can claim Mission Accomplished on this nightmare.

Recovery due to vaccinations? what utter nonsense. Seriously, you should not be writing public messages.
Vaccinations are never going to eradicate covid-19- just like the common cold and flu are with us.
It is smoke and mirrors. The PCR test was being used at a far to high cycle rate and now they have brought it back down and magically covid cases are dropping.
Perhaps mentally vaccinations are encouraging people to do more but its not logical and its not science.
The governments should have never shut down small businesses in the first place.
Didn't read the article but did see a false statement. Recovery is NOT due to vaccinations - it is due to the state governments backing off on their unnecessary restrictions.
The pandemic is nearly over, however the current administration and some companies will have you believe that the "only panacea to true recovery" will be to mass vaccinate. This is a very misleading agenda.
I'm in the performing arts. The action Arts (theatre, dance, music, especially the many forms of classical music) are still crippled by the pandemic. A lot of people have gone to zoom to offer classes and to show videos of their work, but very few dancers, non-pop musicians and actors are getting much benefit from this approach.
The pandemic ending before summer? That's truly wishful thinking.
Don't do it unless you are immune compromised. Do your research before you get your vax! The true will be revealed.
I think that forcing people to get a shot is not a great way to claim Mission Accomplished on this nightmare.
My experience with 2021 vacation rentals in Ocean City is that we are recovering nicely. Using 2019 as my benchmark, 2020 rentals were down 25% from the year before on a dollar basis. For 2021, I have already surpassed my 2020 rentals by 13%, and I still have slots to fill in August, September, and October. My goal is to exceed my rentals for 2019. I believe that I have a chance to meet or exceed my 2019 rental dollar totals. The spring has started out a little week, but recently with good vaccination news, spring rentals have picked up.
I would be interested in seeing the vaccine results for those that received the shots. There should be a recommendation, not requirement, for vaxed people to have a follow-up antigen test to see if they have truly developed antibodies at three, six and nine months out for shots. As for the pandemic, it was nice to be out at a bar having a drink and supporting local business on Easter Sunday.
