The Smart Connect Is Over. Now It’s Time to Activate Your Network.

Jan 9th, 2026

Smart Connects are designed to introduce you to the right people.

What they don’t automatically do is tell you what to do next or how much opportunity is sitting just beyond the first conversation.

That’s the shift you should be making in 2026: not just connecting with people, but focusing on understanding who can actually help you grow.

If you leave a Smart Connect with a list of names, you’ve only completed step one. The members who consistently see results use Alignable 360 to turn those introductions into momentum.

Here’s how to do exactly that and how Alignable 360 changes the game after the session ends.

Step 1: Move From “Who Did I Meet?” to “Who Can Help Me Grow?”

The first mistake most members make is treating every Smart Connect match the same.

High-performing users ask a different question immediately after the session:

Why does this relationship matter and what role could it play in my business?

Not every connection is meant to become a customer. Some are referral partners. Others are connectors, collaborators, or long-term peers.

This is where Alignable 360 creates a clear advantage. Instead of guessing, members can see:

  • How someone fits into their broader network
  • Who they’re connected to
  • Where second-degree introductions may exist

You’re no longer just assigning a label, you’re identifying relationship leverage.

Action: For each Smart Connect match, decide whether this person is a customer, referral partner, collaborator, or connector and why.

Step 2: Use Context to Follow Up With Confidence

Most follow-ups fail because they’re generic.

“Great meeting you” doesn’t move a relationship forward. Context does.

Members who use Alignable 360 don’t start from zero. They can see:

  • Mutual connections
  • Industry overlap
  • Potential introduction paths

That changes the tone of the follow-up completely.

Example:

“I noticed we share a few connections in the marketing and professional services space. I’d love to explore whether there’s a referral opportunity here — would a quick 20-minute conversation make sense?”

This isn’t about being clever. It’s about being relevant — and relevance comes from insight.

Action: Follow up within 24–48 hours using one specific piece of relationship context.

Step 3: Turn Introductions Into a Clear Next Step

Smart Connect creates access. Growth happens when access turns into action.

Every post-session interaction should lead to one of three outcomes:

  • A 1:1 conversation
  • A specific introduction
  • A defined future check-in

Small business owners using Alignable as a relationship system, not just a social network, don’t rely on memory or vague intentions. They anchor relationships with purpose.

This is the difference between networking and network intelligence.

Action: End every conversation with a next step that has timing and intent.

Step 4: Keep Relationships Moving Without Over-Networking

The strongest networks aren’t built by constant outreach, they’re built through intentional visibility.

Members with access to relationship insights know:

  • Which connections are worth nurturing
  • When showing up matters
  • Where introductions create value

Free users often fall into the trap of treating all connections equally. Members using Alignable 360 prioritize based on who someone is and who they know —which makes staying engaged feel natural, not forced.

Action: Identify 3–5 Smart Connect relationships with the highest long-term potential and focus your energy there.

Step 5: Re-Evaluate Your Network Like a Growth Asset

As Alignable evolves in 2026, the biggest shift is this: your network isn’t a list — it’s an asset.

High-performing members regularly review:

  • Which relationships are progressing
  • Which ones unlock second-degree opportunities
  • Which ones no longer align with their goals

When you can see how relationships connect — not just that they exist — your time compounds instead of scatters.

Action: Review your relationships monthly and double down where the leverage is real.

From Social Networking to Relationship Intelligence

Smart Connect gets you in the room.

Alignable 360 helps you understand why the room matters and what to do next once you’re there.

That’s the shift we want you to make in 2026: Less guessing, more clarity. Less networking noise, more relationship signal.

If you’re serious about turning Smart Connect conversations into repeatable growth, the next step isn’t attending more sessions.

What happens if one takes step 1 and flip the question, “

Step 1: Move From “Who Did I Meet?” to “Who Can Help Me Grow?” to who can I help to grow?”

Being other-centric starts with relationship-first prospecting, and not everyone fits whom we meet. However, personally, growth in business and finding one’s true value within, finds value-added growth throughout the process. Spot-on Don.

You mean people dont just magically send me referrals ;)
Seriously, thank you for all you do! From attending a couple of your Premium Jump Starts to your articles, it is a great resource for newer members (personally about 3 months)
ie Learning about tags and how to search them, how to search my connection's connections for introductions
I appreciate that you share these articles to help newer members
Most of whom I meet and have follow up zoom with are either under 6 months or active 4 plus years, not many between
The newer members I meet, I regularly send to your 20 minute daily Jump Start to help them and the feedback I have gotten is they learn lots!
Keep sharing experience to help others be successful!

🔥 I always leave SmartConnects fired up and ready to connect with most (if not all) the break-out partners from the call.

💡 My advice is to act on the adrenaline built up during the call!  Connect immediately!  Schedule a discovery call.  Make the magic happen!

Good luck 🙌

Another essential read to help understand how to be effective on this amazing platform.

I have a pretty good handle on "step 1" and what you describe in this article is my focus going forward.

I’ve practiced Step 1 since forever. Specifically’Is this person is a customer, referral partner, collaborator, or connector and why’. I’ve had a process in place for Step 2 as well. Step 3 is a given. Step 4 has been a process in place just as long as the previous steps. I add tags and place people in groups inside my own CRM. A practice I’ve has ever since the days of the roll-a-Dex. In the past I would put all the business cards I collected in a 3 ring binder with plastic sheets that had sleeves similar to what sports cards collectors use. I still have those 3 ring binders with those business cards. Most of them do not work in the same place and some have passed away. Since I’ve had these practices in place Step 5 is done on a regular basis. As such, some of those in my network have become long term friends and some are like family. I started creating my follow strategies as far back as 2008 after quitting my last job 😂

Outstanding Article! You broke it down perfectly. Can you help me "Build The Digital Field of Dreams" - "Build it and they will Come"

Regard,

Steve
