I own a dietary supplement specialty retail store (about 2,100sq.ft). The biggest challenges are customer service, making sure the employees are happy to do the work and represent the owner as good as possible; and making sure the inventory is not overstocked or under stocked.

There are some great ways to engage your employees and inspire the kind of loyalty you're looking for. Here are some quick tips:

  • Write out 6 guiding principles for your business.  Describe them in one sentence and find an image to demonstrate the point.  Print this out and post all over the employee parts of the store.
  • Go over these principles with your staff regularly until they roll their eyes at you like teenagers. ;-)
  • Do some team-building exercises, either while they're at work or invite them to join you at a restaurant or BBQ.
  • On-the-clock team-building exercises could be having staff members trade responsibilities for a day.
  • We've found that businesses who hold fun, non-working events for their staff have incredible retention and growth.  One of our clients holds a yearly picnic with competitive volleyball.
  • Ask your customers about their experience.  You can do this with things like share boxes and e-mail surveys
  • Hold some educational lunch 'n learns for staff about inventory, stocking, and customer service.
  • Hope some of these can be useful for you! Inspiring loyalty is a struggle for medium and large business.  Friendly and personal generally do well to keep employees happy, which keep customers happy.
