Things are only worth what someone else is willing to trade for it. An Honus Wagner baseball card is worth >$3 million to some, and just the cardboard it’s printed on to others. That being said, a government backing a currency only means they keep the value based on their trade position and strength of their military. Backing a currency with gold, is just like backing a currency with cardboard, if people will give it value. That being said, cryptocurrency is still new and fluctuates a lot, which can either be very bad or very good if you are a day trader type, or eh, if you are in for the long run.
