You can ask the contractor for a COI (certificate of insurance).  The COI will state who the contractor is using for business insurance, the effective dates of policy and coverages.  Even though the COI may have a current date I still would follow up with a verification phone call to the carrier or agency to make sure everything is up to speed with the policy.
