(more) Hi Drama Dad,  I worked for my father in 2 businesses.  You have to talk to each other, and really listen.  The problems we had were, he thought he knew what to do from experience, and I was trying to use text book knowledge.  You usually end up meeting in the middle, and that is why communication is so important.  Discuss the problems, and try to work out the solutions together. My father used to say, "I know what the problems are, give me solutions".  It is easier said than done. If you work together and communicate you will be able to overcome virtually anything that comes at you. You both have to understand that neither one of you has all the answers. I explain to the customer what we do and how we do it. Show them the quality and type of work we produce.  I ask if they have a problem with their current vendor, what it is, then try to solve it.  Sometimes customers don't know you exist and that there are alternatives.  I never talk bad about... Show them the quality and type of work we produce.  I ask if they have a problem with their current vendor, what it is, then try to solve it.  Sometimes customers don't know you exist and that there are alternatives.  I never talk bad about my competitors, and try to stay away from getting into pricing.  I don't want to get into a bidding war, someone can always beat a price if they want the job.  Then I just tell them to give us a try.   If you don't ask, you won't get the work.

Congratulations on getting this far!  You have the knowledge to be able to talk about your business, so know you have to get the word out about your business.  Try to find networking meetings, chamber of commerce, local groups or any of those types of meetings, they will usually let you attend at... (more) Congratulations on getting this far!  You have the knowledge to be able to talk about your business, so know you have to get the word out about your business.  Try to find networking meetings, chamber of commerce, local groups or any of those types of meetings, they will usually let you attend at least a few meetings for free.  If people don't know about the business, they can't use your business.  Ask your current customer's for referrals.  Spread the word, be visible and talk to people.  As the word spreads, you will get the clients.  Keep pushing.  Don't get discouraged, and you will be successful. I agree, go out and network.  Networking events are not as scary as cold calling since everyone is there to meet new people.  Just be yourself and talk to other people, many of them will probably feel same way you do.  You are not selling at network events, you are just making connections. ... (more) I agree, go out and network.  Networking events are not as scary as cold calling since everyone is there to meet new people.  Just be yourself and talk to other people, many of them will probably feel same way you do.  You are not selling at network events, you are just making connections. Remember, in sales, when you get a no, it is not you they are saying no to, it is not the right time or product.  Don't take it personally.
