It is important to "never let your network die" even in the best of times. During crisis, as we are currently navigating through, it becomes even more important to reach out to those in your network. (more) Some people may be able to point to a "key" ingredient in securing a great client, but I feel there is much, much more to it than that. You may know, and embrace, the fact that you need to qualify each client...that is, asking the right questions and listening. Then it comes down to building a relationship with them. I have always found that if I have something in common with a prospective client (like hunting or we're both pilots, etc.) that I can expand on that to meet with them socially. It comes down to the fact that people want to do business with those that they know, like and trust.

Pay per click can certainly generate interest, but it's up to the person at your business that gets back to the connection (and hopefully within 24 hours or less) to 'close' the sale. I have found that internet based marketing (pay per click, SEO) has benefited my business much more that social... (more) Pay per click can certainly generate interest, but it's up to the person at your business that gets back to the connection (and hopefully within 24 hours or less) to 'close' the sale. I have found that internet based marketing (pay per click, SEO) has benefited my business much more that social media advertising or posts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn). But it comes down to how you deal with the advertising related connection (knowledgeable, selling the benefits of your product, and often times, pricing).

No doubt, we all get that type of client that is unreasonable, rude, or just plain nasty. When one of those comes around, I either price myself out of their range, or don't hesitate to "put them in their place" verbally. If they don't like it, so be it. When one of those comes around, I either price myself out of their range, or don't hesitate to "put them in their place" verbally. If they don't like it, so be it. I have plenty of good clients and don't need the negativity of less-than-desirable clients. Also, I have not hesitated to "drop" a client that was either abusive, or harassed my staff (verbally or physically).

Networking, whether for business or personal reasons, is paramount to a business or person's success. Every time you are with other people you have a networking opportunity (think church, coaching youth sports and other school activities, college alumni activities/events, charitable... (more) Networking, whether for business or personal reasons, is paramount to a business or person's success. Every time you are with other people you have a networking opportunity (think church, coaching youth sports and other school activities, college alumni activities/events, charitable volunteering...you get the idea). But of course there are the regular networking clubs, like BNI, local Chamber of Commerce, military groups (if you're active duty or a veteran...sometimes they allow advocates of the military), and industry associations. Networking doesn't need to take place in person (although that's always preferable in my opinion) as you can participate in web based seminars and workshops. The bottom line is that you need to make the effort to network, make a lot of phone calls, set up coffee meetings or lunches, and always have a lot of business cards and company brochures to share. Last, there is a book every networker should read, "The 20 Minute Network Meeting" by Marcia Ballinger. It's available on Amazon...get it and read it!
