(more) Buckle Up: The Entrepreneurial Roller-Coaster Being an entrepreneur is like riding a roller-coaster. You will experience several highs and lows over the course of your career— and sometimes all at once. I have had many ups and downs with my international company over the past 35 years, but the most memorable ride occurred in 1991. I went back and forth between feeling ecstatic and defeated over the course of a single day. My Calgary AB-based balance and wellness company, Fitter International Inc., had been operating in starvation mode for six years. The cash wasn’t flowing and our consumers were just beginning to realize the importance of balance training products. Eager to take a hiatus from the strain managing a business-on-the-brink of failure, I bought a plane ticket and visited my older brother in Hollywood, CA. I intended to take some tennis lessons, relax and simply wind down.  Fate had something else in store for me. Prior to departing, I received a call from Powder Magazine. They had received a press release from my company and wanted to do a story on our flagship product the Pro Fitter 3-D Cross Trainer. They were interested in interviewing me at their office in Dana Point, California. I was stoked, to say the least. Upon arriving in Los Angeles, I rented a car and declined the rental insurance as it was already covered by my businesses new car insurance policy. I started off early morning on my 2 hour road trip from Hollywood to Dana Point. The magazine interview went great with lots of photos and product positioning. The story was sure to be a breakthrough for the company. Driving back I was feeling euphoric, I stopped at Newport Beach, splurged on a lime-green wet suit and rented a surfboard. I proceeded to lock up all my belongings in the trunk of my car. I was ready to ride some waves and relax! After three hours of surfing, I sat on the beach and watched dolphins dance in the surf during the sunset.  It was the perfect end to a perfect day. Until…. When I returned to my car, I saw that a Volkswagen hippy van was parked where my vehicle had been. Standing there in disbelief, I realized my car had been stolen, along with my wallet, passport, briefcase, tennis racquet, Pro Fitter and all my clothes and other items safely locked in the trunk. After frantically searching the length of the beach for my car, I returned to the surf shop with no ID and no money.  I was up the beach without a paddle! From the Surf shop we called the police and reported the car stolen. With no money and a lot of worry, I had few options to choose from. Thankfully, the surf shop owner returned my US$20 surfboard rental fee; it was just enough money for me to buy a burger and take the shuttle from John Wayne airport to LAX airport. To put things in perspective, I started surfing at 2 p.m. and by midnight I was walking bare foot, broke and hungry in a swimsuit and pink Cowtown Cattle Company Stampede shirt around LAX streets. I was trying to hitch a ride to my brother’s Hollywood home. By 3 a.m., I had reached his place and crashed in exhaustion. When I awoke, I called my office to report the stolen car. I was shocked when my insurance agent told me she did not put the US$25 annual rental car waiver on my insurance policy, thus there was no rental car insurance.  Could it get any worse? I proceeded to cancel all of my credit cards and discovered that each one had been charged over their limit at various retail stores along the Pacific Coast Highway. I was now down one US$12,000 vehicle and was without any credit cards, identification, passport or clothing. I needed to fly home. Since my airplane ticket was also stolen, I called Air Canada and – through my office – bought a new one-way fare (first class was all they had left). In clothes I borrowed from my 5' 10" tall brothers - I am 6'4"- I rushed to the airport for my 12 noon flight, anxious to put this madness behind me.  As I waited in the first class check-in line, I to glance behind me— to my surprise, there stood Wayne Gretzky! He was on his way to Edmonton, Canada for the first time since he left the Edmonton Oilers hockey team. I introduced myself and mentioned I was the Fitter guy, knowing he used my product after his knee injury. Standing there in my awkwardly short pants, I proceeded to tell him about my crazy day. Wayne and his wife (Janet grew up in Newport Beach) were in disbelief to hear how much trouble I had encountered in the past 24 hours. As we boarded the plane, I was humored to discover the first row of the plane held Wayne’s agent, Janet, Wayne and myself. What a Great high to end a wild trip! In a little more than 24 hours, I had gone from promoting my company in a leading magazine article, to being barefoot, almost naked and hungry on the streets of LA, to flying home in first class with the greatest hockey player of our time, who happened to be a happy Fitter customer. In that 24 hours, I laughed, I cried, and it became a part of my life story! It was a day I’ll never forget. It continues to remind me that being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs, but overall, it's an exciting ride if that's what you choose to make it.

Revive your 9 to 5 if you work in an Office. This means stand often and move at least every 30 minutes with out compromising good posture. I use a stand sit desk and an Active Office Board under foot to keep me moving. Walk as often as you can.http://www.fitter1.com/ (more) Revive your 9 to 5 if you work in an Office.
