If you are using Quickbooks, hire a Quickbooks proadvisor.  It is money well spent.  I believe with your subscription you do get access to a listing of proadvisors in your area.  When you are hiring this person, ask them if they have experience in your industry.  An experienced bookkeeper should have a good idea how to get your books cleaned up and running efficiently and set you and your staff on the right track going forward.  As a CPA who handles small business year-ends, I know that when you submit messed up bookkeeping it will cost you quite a bit more at an accountant's office to have it fixed.
