The first thing anybody needs before using social media or content to market their business is a strategy. Who do you want to reach? What is your value proposition? How do you differ from your competitors? Where does your audience hang out online? What type of content do they like to consume? What is your budget? These are just a few of the questions you need to ask before you start a digital marketing campaign.

On the other hand, sometimes we can get so stuck in making every perfect that we don't actually /do/ anything. While I agree that you need to consider these things, sometimes it doesn't need to be all figured out to get started.

Hi Susan, I'm afraid I have to disagree. You can waste a great deal of time and money if you don't consider the basics: 1. Defining your target audience and where they gather online can be as simple as looking at your current customer base and sending them a survey about their online activities and what type of content they want to see from you. 2. Defining your goals -- what you want to achieve -- is critical. It gives you direction and purpose in your marketing efforts. 3. Knowing what type of content to create, which appeals to your audience (derived from your research), is essential. Otherwise, it's a waste of your time to create and publish content that no one cares about. 4. A budget should be at the top of this list. Defining a budget helps you decide what you can afford to do in your marketing and prioritize your campaigns.
