Well, that's a question. As a child, my father would use me for all the marketing for his shoe store, so that was really the beginning - I was probably 7 or 8 years old. I began learning formally about Communications in college in 1992. I began my business in 1995, and have been earning my advanced degrees the hard way "on the job" ever since.
I am in an ever changing role, so making lists is good but I rarely make it through my lists the way I had planned. It's proven most important that I am good at defining the most important and urgent things to tackle and the unimportant things that need to fall off as they come in front of me. I...

I am in an ever changing role, so making lists is good but I rarely make it through my lists the way I had planned. It's proven most important that I am good at defining the most important and urgent things to tackle and the unimportant things that need to fall off as they come in front of me. I have to be agile to keep things moving well for my clients and take on new things that are urgent quickly. I use tools like my project management system and CRM, but I have to remind myself and my team that those are tools, and we have to use our human sense to respond and prioritize, not just rely on the checklist!

So a good way to do this is understand how you improve the lives of your customers now. You can figure this out by surveying customers. When you survey them, pay attention to their vocabulary so you can create a message in the "Voice of the Customer" that will resonate with prospects. If you are a startup, use some tools like writing a positioning statement to jumpstart ideas about your differentiation that you can incorporate into messaging.
