If you have postcards you can mail, mail them to your top prospects. Simple posts on your FB page or twitter page does not get seen by a large number of people so individual invitations reach far more people.

Major corporations have largely moved to online applications where meeting or getting to know decision makers in increasingly difficult. Smaller, local companies are much easier to find and create relationship with.  One of the best ways to meet and create relationships is through networking and referrals.  If you can find employees within major companies who are willing to support your cause and advocate for you, they may be able to facilitate introductions to you. Often times you can meet decision makers from companies at other events they already sponsor.  If you have no options other than to complete the online application process, first, make sure you fit their giving guidelines -- don't waste yours and their time if you don't.  Second, make sure you have a well crafted story to tell and are able to sell your cause in an articulate way. Decision makers are people too, and its important to not only answer the basic questions but to also touch their heart with how important your cause is how much good their sponsorship can accomplish.

You can ignore it because it will always be there lurking beneath the surface. I run a charity that was founded by two mothers who both lost their only sons to AIDS 25 years ago as a way to honor their sons' memories and to raise funds for the kinds of agencies who took care of their sons before they died. Taking action does help you work through some of the grief. We raise funds and awareness through the production of entertainment events. Awareness is just as important as raising funds because you can't raise funds if no one is aware of your noni-profit. You have some excellent advice on attracting awareness from the others in this string but a big part of that is how you tell your story. People give when you touch their hearts. Your story and those of the other 10 families is how to touch people's hearts. If you can find some allies in the community who are willing to help you share your story and let people know about your charity, that can be an effective way of reaching more people.  If you have other charities who deal with causes related to yours, ask them to help you in raising awareness about your charity. Send a press release to local media about your charity and share your stories there. If someone is willing to do a story about your charity in a local paper or television show, you can reach bigger audiences.  And do create a Facebook Charity page to keep telling your stories and offering ways for people to donate. I send you condolences and good wishes for fulfilling your mission to honor your children's memories.

Media sponsorships where you offer value (tickets, exposure, etc) is great but your date is too close to get much of that. Cross promotions with other agencies who appeal to the same demographic as yours can also be successful. There are also many online event calendars that are free to post events on so check out some of those. When you use social media, make sure your board, staff and everyone else working with you is aware of it and share your promotions to keep expanding your reach. And sometimes its worth it to spend a little money to reach the right crowd. People won't come to something they don't know anything about. And make sure all your promotions include all the pertinent information that people understand what the event is about.

The idea is to make that payment as easy as possible for the donor. The more "work" they have to do to complete the payment, the more likely they are to not complete it. And never forget to thank them profusely.

Event sponsorships is one way but most agencies also create strategies for soliciting individual donations from their supporter base. Sponsors usually sponsor an event or program. Foundations prefer to fund programs so may be your better source of funds. But you need to do some research on foundations that support military family programs and then read their guidelines to see if you qualify.  You can do a lot of research online...
