(1) I find that I am most productive in the morning before the phone starts ringing and the e-mails start flowing in. If you are a morning person, get up two hours before your normal time, pour a cup of coffee, and knock out the sticky problems early in the day.
(2) Don't let your e-mails' inbox fill up. File each e-mail (or delete it) once you have dealt with it. The only e-mails that remain in my inbox at the end of each day are those that require follow-up steps. Your e-mail inbox can become a sort of working to-do list.
(3) Don't let the afternoon drain your productivity. I find that I have a hard time focusing by the late afternoon. That's a great time to take a break - go for a run, make a gourmet dinner, whatever. I feel refreshed and ready to get back to work after the break.
(4) TAKE VACATIONS! No one can be productive if they are tired and drained. At Lend A Box, when we take a vacation, there is no calling into the office or checking e-mail. A sign of a well-run and well-delegated office is the ability of any one of us to take a mental break and truly check out for a week or two.
