Can someone still buy a new camera with all the mobile hype?

There are those who take pictures and those who make photographs. To wit, it's not the arrow it's the archer. Regardless of the hardware in our hands, it still takes talent, knowledge, an eye, experience, and a desire to create a memorable image. We must still know the difference between good light and bad. The tools of the trade now allow us to expand the traditional image capture and darkroom processes to a point that would make Ansel blush with joy. Worry not about the fancified camera, but about the holder who thinks that's all they need.

Great response, Steve! I shoot with my Samsung Note 9 phone & my Sony HX80 camera. I've been shooting as a hobby and entered & won shows with photos from both.

Excellent point Steve. There is a joke pertaining to this. A well know photographer gets invited by a socialite to a dinner party she's having. She invites him because, in the eyes of her guests, it will give her social status re: the arts. When she's introducing the photographer to her guests she make the comment , "you take such magnificent pictures, you must have a wonderful camera". The photographer takes the left handed comment in stride with a smile and a thank you. After a wonderful dinner the photographer compliments the hostess. "I would like to thank you for the invitation and the wonderful dinner. Everything was cooked to perfection." The hostess is now beaming with pride before the photographer adds, "you must have a wonderful stove." I have a shot that I took 20 years ago with a little Minolta P&S 4MP camera. It's boats in the fog. It won awards in 3 different juried shows. It's also been published in calendars. Like you said, the camera is just a tool. I've seen people with $5000.00 cameras that can't produce anything more than a snapshot.
