How We Got Started
I started as a newspaper photographer and free-lance photographer in high school and college. It paid for touition in the '70's. After graduating with a B.S. in elementary education, I "changed my major" to professional photography. Still fascinated with teaching and learning, I have continued to teach photography.

Without employees, my business would not be directly affected. When I bring in assistants they makeconsidably more than 15. Long term, increasing the minimom wage will probably have a minot effect on people's lives. It wont stop corporate welfare. Some people will be replaced by machines, like self-checkout. Retailers will absorob small increases in shrinkage, and low wage earners will get their health care insurance with tax payer support.
Clearly, the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation.
However, higher wages will help people pay more into payroll taxes, and benefit at retirement.
Id pay a bit more for office supplies and food, it it would create customers for businesses like mine.

Many, many big weddings are being postponed, for 12 months or more, and not all will fully cancel. Market to the clients who are planning little back-yard wedding ceremonies with the intention of doing something big after the pandemic. Show some style, however downsized. Those clients still need the much of the same expertise. I think demand will be increasing by mid summer. Do the small jobs, stay close to the clients. Wedding Photography is not the main focus of my business any more, although I still like it. I work with photographers who's main focus is weddings, and I photographed a few small, 12-person outdoor weddings this past year. They were really special. Just survive until we get to the other side of this mess.

Reading the results of this survey was enlightening. My business is more typical than I realized. Social media tends to say that everyone else in my industry but me is doing great; but the opposite is true. We're struggling to keep the lights on, our clients are struggling too and not spending. The Dow reached 30,000 while millions of working people, many of whom are our customers, are lining up for food donations. We're truly in unprecedented times.
Vaccinations at scale. Regrouping, getting beyond "back to normal". I'm studying and planning for what comes next; looking for new stuff to bring to clients. Lack of client work is an opportunity to decide what comes next.

Celebration goes from 28 to 5 people. Keeping it small; we may have a family zoom meet. I haven't cooked a turkey for Thanksgiving in years, only sides.

I offered lawn signs to my high school senior families. I offered the best lawn signs in town, with contact free delivery. The promotion did not make much money, especially considering the labor involved with working with the vendor and making the deliveries. It did create some good will.

No news from the SBA. Attended a SCORE we binary yesterday and found it helpful. On another conference call I found that professional photographers, just about everywhere are hurting. My local bank doesn't want to talk with me until federal money becomes available.
