Our business is more a non-profit ministry. We've never made a profit, and I already pay my workers more than the recommended percentage of sales. In fact, I receive no pay and every year for 20 years have liquidated my personal retirement savings to keep the bookstore open and pay my workers as much as possible. But even with all that, I could never pay $15 an hour minimum wage. I'm certain many small businesses would be shut down if forced to start workers at $15/hr. I never start people at minimum wage, I pay better, based on their skills and background experience and give raises and bonuses based on work and longevity. Even so, there is a huge cost gap between hiring workers for $11, for example, when I know it's years to fully train them, and being forced to start everyone at a minimum of $15.
Our industry is one where a lot is required to do it well but no profit to accompany , no matter how tightly I manage expenses. It's not a matter of holding back, the profit just isn't there! Such a law would kill these businesses and the jobs that they currently provide! Big business and small businesses are very different. Politicans have no comprehension of the ramifications!
The biggest impact is reduced sales - like 67% for April. And in our industry, Christian retail, consumers will shop online and once "encouraged / forced" to shop online, I'm not so sure we will get them back. Plus look at the huge unemployment. People cannot spend what they do not have. I...

The biggest impact is reduced sales - like 67% for April. And in our industry, Christian retail, consumers will shop online and once "encouraged / forced" to shop online, I'm not so sure we will get them back. Plus look at the huge unemployment. People cannot spend what they do not have. I understand that. I already work without pay and have liquidated savings plus the PPP loan to keep our doors open. It's hard because I cannot do normal orders for "new products." Instead, I'm aggressively putting on clearance our stock to general some cash flow. Very discouraging.

But they know our computer data base is specifically designed to search Bibles out by translation & it gives us feature info, such as font size, red letter, all kinds of things customers need to know before ordering if not in stock. And we imprint Bibles, which Barnes & Noble does not. I certainly appreciate their directing customers to us when questions are beyond their scope.

From the bookstore, we look for charities and churches with similar Christian based values. Also look for those charities which are well run (low overhead, organized events), those that recognize Cornerstone Christian Supply is also a non-profit ministry and encourage their members to help support us and shop local. As individual owners, our tithe and missions and building fund checks go to our local church, Miracle Valley Ministries; beyond those commitments, we also look for Christian value ministries to give to, particularly those with a heart for the poor and downtrodden. Definitely not inclined to give to large ministries with high paid staff and mega budgets. Not the same life values and goals. (I have to pay my workers and all our overhead [rent, utilities, payroll taxes, general supplies]; but I myself have never received any pay nor return on investment. It is total ministry from us as owners.)
That answer has to be one precious lady customer whose husband was interested in archeology, but not so much the Bible. I showed her the Archeological Study Bible, she purchased it, we laid hands on it and prayed over it & her testimony was that he loves it and is reading the Bible! Praise God...

I'm not sure what you mean by "sponsor." Here in Cheyenne, WY, churches know that our Christian bookstore is not for profit; but they also know that I am generous in donations. So they let me know when they are doing a fund raiser for an event, and we gather up slow moving or slightly imperfect inventory and donate it to the church. They usually sell these at a silent auction as a fund raiser. I believe all churches and Christian businesses are struggling now, so I'd also encourage your parishioners to donate specifically to your activities for the children. Sometimes people are more inclined to give beyond tithes and offerings when they know specifically where it will be allocated.
