Hi Henry,
I am in the direct response advertising business with a company called RSVP Publications. We offer a cooperative, higher end postcard deck that very specifically targets the top 30% of owner occupied households based on home value and household income. I have worked in radio and television as well.
Anyway, I would agree that the 2 main forms of advertising are direct response (usually referring to direct mail, digital pay-per-click, or any other trackable or offer based media) and branding (tv, radio, magazines, or social media). Branding typically requires a long and consistent campaign or campaigns to be effective. Committing a sufficient budget is critical to be a recognizable and memorable name in your target demographic's mind. Direct response relies more on a consumers's need for particular goods or services and less on who is performing or delivering.
So, to answer your question, which is vague...for my clients I start judging efficacy of our direct response advertising with a 1 to 10 basis. Meaning that for every $1 spent advertising I like to see $10 in sales. Of course we all like to see higher returns than that, but a 10% lead cost puts you in a position where you should be making a decent profit and generating return customers or clients and revenue.
Branding is simply generating public awareness and is difficult to actually monetize.
When working in conjunction, branding and direct response advertising makes for a much more effective campaign.
Depending on your business, I would really take a look to see if there is a RSVP franchise in your area. We are able to reach around 10 x's the number of households you could reach with a solo direct mail piece which simply makes the net you cast much larger, remaining very targeted to a more affluent consumer.
I hope this is helpful to those reading.
Cheers.

This has been a learning experience for me. I work with a national advertising franchise, RSVP Publications. I am learning that because I know that we are fairly priced and a great value for the majority of our clients, it is not difficult to mostly hold my ground on rate. Focusing on value vs cost or quality.
Grant Cardone addresses this in his book "Sell or Be Sold: How to Get Your Way in Business and Life"
I listen to his books in Audible and it's a great way to gain insight into selling your product or service based on value.
Check it out.
