You're not calling potential customers and talking to them. There are plenty of independent contractors out there with whom you are competing. The smart ones are reaching out through LinkedIn to make connections then calling those who agree to connect.  (more) You're not calling potential customers and talking to them. I'm not very creative. I make sure I'm working with a position description that accurately describes the position. I give a copy to each candidate I interview and I ask them to walk me through their background and experience versus the position description. It gets a little boring at times;... It gets a little boring at times; however, it assures me the candidate is truly qualified for the position.

It depends on your level of experience. As you climb the career ladder to mid and senior level positions it becomes a good investment.
