How We Got Started

Started my home-based business in July, 1992 as Ference Marketing & Communications, specializing in the foodservice industry. I got off to a slow start and didn't purchase business cards for the first six months because I wasn't even sure what types of services or products I would offer.

But, things changed very quickly,

Before I knew it I was a full-service promotional agency. I was coordinating trade shows, implementing advertising and public relations campaigns, writing and placing radio ads, whatever my clients needed, I delivered. If it was out of my area of expertise, I was in the loop with freelances, designers or whatever profession was needed.

Today, I rarely leave my home office as most clients contact me for all of their promotional product needs. With the Internet, I can provide hands-on service within minutes of a request for ideas, pricing, products or whatever is needed.

Out of the office, my time is spent at trade shows, wine festivals, and other events.

Believe in the power of ten. When I first started selling advertising I soon realized that if I made ten cold calls, I would literally trip over a sale. As I got better as a salesperson, I noticed that I had to make 10 phone calls to get an appointment where I was almost assured to make a sale.... (more) Believe in the power of ten. When I first started selling advertising I soon realized that if I made ten cold calls, I would literally trip over a sale. As I got better as a salesperson, I noticed that I had to make 10 phone calls to get an appointment where I was almost assured to make a sale. Now that I'm semi-retired and spend most of my day interacting with clients via email and prospecting on social media, I follow the same power of ten logic. Try it, it just might work for you.

(more) Building a relationship with clients is the easy part, the hard part is convincing them that building a relationship is exactly what you want to do. One of the things I would mention to prospects is the fact that my goal was to be one of their best vendors. So how do you convince them. I would add that most of my clients have been with me for a long time. I had two reasons for the longevity. One, I really do build successful relationships with clients because I truly believe that is the best working arrangement. Second, if they didn't believe me, my other reason was that it's simply too hard to find new clients. So once I have them, I intend to keep them. If I was given a shot with a small portion of the business or a small project to prove myself, they just might be satisfied. On the flip side, I was always pretty particular who I did business with. So it works both ways. I only want to do business with like-minded businesses. Hope this helps.
