As a marketer myself, it's a tad hard for me to answer this question effectively (LOL). But I would personally say that building clientele as a marketer is most effective when done directly and genuinely. Using traditional marketing techniques simply don't tend to work on business owners - I've found the most success through attending networking meetings, contacting business owners via Alignable/LinkedIN, working local events, and word of mouth.

Obviously there is an SEO and PPC component to the marketing industry, but the online atmosphere for digital marketing especially is so highly competitive that unless you're willing to dump tons of money into it, you're not going to see much results (Plus the web traffic locally isn't really there either). 

Marketing is about creating the demand within your clients, the demand doesn't necessarily exist otherwise.
