How We Got Started

I am a two-time national book award author for 2 of my 8 business publications. I have created and delivered major sales results for over 1,000 businesses.

After retiring (for one day!) from a national award-winning 12-year "Madison Ave Top 10" ad agency career (branding for Fortune 500 companies), I became a fulltime university and college business professor for 12 years. I hold an MBA (marketing) and an MA (human development) course equivalency.

I retired again (also for one day!) before starting my own business: coaching entrepreneurs, branding, staff training, business and healthcare (program and practice) development/writing and consulting services... local/regional/national.

To answer the question: You put your head down and charge forward performing your best with what you have and stop worrying about competitors. This doesn't mean to ignore the competition. It means to FOCUS on making your own products/services great! The only "rule of thumb" I have ever followed and coached is to write a billboard for your business in 7 words or less... a lot harder to do than most imagine, and I know of situations that took weeks (!) to get these 7 words exactly right, but that discipline forces you to get to the heart of what needs to be communicated to find those "first client/clients" you seek. Then: If you can write, write. If you can talk, talk. If you can be involved in your community or church, be involved with your community or church. Bottom line: Even in today's tech-crazed stampede, it is still true that nothing beats word-of-mouth (or the price!) for getting started. It simply takes networking with family, friends, former co-workers, neighbors, community organizations, as well as friends of family, friends of friends, etc. Yes, it's always a good idea to distribute flyers, emails, get interviewed by local media, but none of that will have impact without consistent use of your 7 words. Oh, and Good Luck!

The value of building and maintaining interpersonal relationships and continual networking cannot be underestimated or glossed over... and I am convinced that it doesn't matter whether you're selling hot dogs or doing heart transplants. The how-to details (including the productive use of hi-tech tools in the process) are featured in my year-end-release book: Healthcarepreneurs... and in three upcoming workshops scheduled at Tennessee Tech University: http://ow.ly/itc030g0dm1.

(more) With experience in academia setting up a program to accommodate business people with your need, and having years later been in a similar predicament as you, I solved the problem with the same solution I had set up on a college campus -- an internship program. I recommend you contact your local colleges (especially any community college) and speak with the dean of business to determine if they have a formal intern program. If they do, submit a (brief paragraph or two) description of what you have in mind and proceed from there. If there's no formal program in place, ask if you could speak with the business faculty chairperson or a specific business professor who may be able to point you to some prospects who either of them thinks might be interested in the description you write. These situations run from minimum wage to zero pay, depending on the opportunity and matching availabilities. I have had a (no salary) intern working with me for 3 semesters (whose performance I rate and who gets academic credit) helping turn a book I've written into a video... he's a business major with a small photography/video business. I take him to dinner every semester and meet with him regularly to discuss applications of his coursework to my consulting practice. It's a win-win.

The bottom line seems to be that you want to know more about how to begin sorting things out with this option as well as know how/if/when to respond. In order to get reliable input from others, you need to provide more info about your own experience and current situation, as well as about the prospective client and his business and specific goals. [IF you want to just talk it through once you have all of this information, let me know (hal@businessworks.US). On the surface, however, and without knowing more, it doesn't sound like the situation is in your present comfort zone.]
