Artist Biography Heather Wilkinson
Heather Wilkinson lives in the Comox Valley. She discovered her love of painting well into her retirement from a career as school counsellor. Being a very active person and usually hiking, cycling, dancing, singing, or travelling she began painting when immobilized by a failing hip. At home and when travelling extensively in India, Cambodia, Laos, Mexico, the UK, Europe she took particular joy in moments of contact with people and places she found beautiful. In 2014 she began painting and developed this skill and passion, and depicted many of these photographically captured moments on paper or canvas.
Heather, who had been a dancer and singer but never thought of herself as an artist, surprised herself by having a knack for portraiture, a gift that appeared in the first year of painting.

“When I first saw her paintings, I could not believe how life like they were. I felt I could reach out and touch the faces, so alive were they. She has captured the joy and delight that shines from their eyes; the faces reflect their inner spirit; her use of colour and blending is remarkable. This is a true talent that has burst forth from Heather and translated itself into an astonishing collection of work that is wonderful to behold.”
Heather has shown in a number of galleries in the Comox Valley, Victoria, and Vancouver. She has shown internationally, in Mexico and in the US. One of her teachers has been Mary Whyte with whom she did a workshop in Venice in 2015.
Another beloved teacher is Efren Gonzales in Mexico with whom she paints oils each year.
