To me. the purpose of a networking event should be to get to know enough about a person to decide whether continued communication is warranted. I think of a networking event just like a speed-dating event. You aren't supposed to leave with marriage proposals or even concrete second dates. You are supposed to leave with the contact info for the ones that might warrant a second date. The confirmation of, and arrangements for, any second date should happen after the networking event rather than during it.
