As a small, non big-tech, business what do you look for in a website? Are you unsatisfied with your website and why?
Answered by:
Cheap is what I am looking for. Why? Because I have never had a website that brought me business, not one single time in my many years of business. For me a website seems to function as a reference point. It allows potential customers to view my offerings, get to know me and get comfortable with hiring me. I am the one who refers potential customers to my website for this purpose. Despite hundreds of thousands of viewers, not a single customer has ever made a purchase from coming in cold off of my website. So why spend money?

I understand that cost is a major factor in small businesses, however, this could be why you’re not seeing the conversion. For inexpensive websites, developers typically A) do not employ the most user friendly and engaging sites to drive client conversion and B) aren’t well versed in specific digital marketing practices. Unfortunately, a fair amount of predatory developers exist take advantage of clients for a quick buck.
You mentioned that you’ve had thousands of views. How have you been able to quantify this? This is where data driven marketing can help you, ie. Identify where your potential clients are dropping off. Modern web practices allow you to start gathering data on your potential clients so you can better segment and target them in order to improve ROI and customer conversion.

For a local business website, you don't necessarily need to spend a lot of money, but you need to make sure you have the needed conversion elements visible. Ensure your phone number is clearly shown at the top of the page, otherwise, most people will simply hit the "back" button and leave your site.
